  1. I am a kitchen designer & we give clients the option to bring in their own measurements or have us go out to the home for a fee.  This fee then goes to the cost of the cabinets.  Our clients are not obligated to buy from us.  If they do go forward, we go out to the home after deposit to confirm measurements & make changes as needed prior to ordering.  You should make sure your kitchen designer does take their own measurements at some point in the process as well so they take responsibility for them.

That being said, these are the tips I give to my clients for doing their own initial measurements.

Start by drawing the basic shape of your room in a "Bird's Eye View" - as if you were looking down from above at your room.  Leave breaks in the lines for window & doors.  You don't need to draw in your cabinets - think walls.

Fill in the measurements of your walls. Make sure you measure the complete walls.  For instance, if there is a doorway on that wall, measure the whole wall first, then the width of the doorway (including casings if any).  Make sure you also measure the distance from the end to the doorway casing, so we know where that doorway falls on the wall, so we know how much wallspace is left over.

When measuring a wall with a window, also measure the window from outside of the casing to the outside of the casing.  We need to know how much wall space is left over for the cabinets.  Don't forget to measure from the end to the window casing as well, so we know where it falls on the wall.

When measuring an L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen, make sure you measure from the back corners, as opposed to the front edge of the countertop.

Note any obstructions, like a pipe chase or a soffit.  If you have a soffit, measure the height to the soffit & the total height of the room as well.

Dishwashers & ranges are usually standard, but make sure you measure the width, depth & height of your refrigerator, because they can vary greatly.  If buying new appliances, have an idea of what you want to get - ie, cooktops, built-in ovens, etc.

These are good starting points.  When I have a client come in with their own msmts, I look them over & let them know what else I will need, if anything.  Good luck & I apologize for the long post!

  2. Designs are not free.  A good (or even decent) kitchen design requires a bit of thought and experience, which you must pay for.  Yes, you can walk into a store and get a design done for free or at low cost, but there is an expectation that you might purchase cabinets, the design is part of the sales pitch.

There are several sites that will let you design your own kitchen.  One that comes to mind is the Merillat site, see http://www.merillat.com/space/planner/in...  I know some of the other manufacturers offer the same or similar service, this is just one that comes to mind.  This tool is limited compared to the tools professionals use (which cost $$$$, by the way), but it is a good, fun start.

  3. Go to a lumberyard. They will do it for free and will know what they are talking about when it comes to designing.
