  1. Here you go, they are great!  b

  2. Ion drives work in space because there's no air resistance and essentially no load.  They cannot be used to move a load to orbit, nor any other terrestrial or near-terrestrial application, because they have a microscopic thrust.

There are conspiracy websites that will tell you stories of monstrous electric-drive or magnetic-drive engines that have been suppressed by The Government so they can power silent helicopters or some fool thing like that.

  3. I think you mean Ionic Engines, which are electrical and move ions to near speed of light and have driven satellites to the far reaches of the solar system and beyond.

One had a capsule with items to inform others about the earth but, so far, 30 or 40 years later (I forget) we had no replies.

They have been used to move Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites into Geo-Stationary orbits, some 26,000 miles away and  is cheaper than using chemical rockets. It takes much longer but, that is not a factor.

Solar cells provide the electric power.

Do a search on "Ionic Propulsion"

There have been ideas using magnetic devices, too.
