good evening,

Getting nuisance calls even though I'm on TPS & ex-directory. Complained to BT & OFCOM, but no help so far. Is there anyone higher than OFCAM to stop these calls?

I do 1471 from my landline & get a number, I try to call, but it's a dead line. BT just say it's an unregistered number.

HOW CAN SOMEONE CALL ME FROM AN UNREGISTERED NUMBER??? WHO PAYS THE BILL???!!!???

any help would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks

  1. I suffer from nuisance calls myself, so I really feel for you. I am on TPS too, but companies are now getting around it by saying "I am not selling you anything". It's a lie. They would not be calling if they didn't want your money. Companies calling from International numbers also get through the TPS system by not being registered to the list of phone numbers that should not be called.

TPS isn't working, BT is not going to put too much effort into stopping nuisance calls because they make money from them. OFCOM has too much else to think about than one lone phone user.

    So, what can you do?

Firstly, DO NOT do a 1471 and call them back. This is one of the tricks they use because if you call them back using their premium number, you WILL be charged, and it could be a very high fee and they make money that way.

    Ignore the missed call.

If you have caller ID, check before you pick up and if the number is withheld, do not answer. Simple as that.

Okay, you want to know how to stop them. Sorry, you won't. But you could reduce the number.

There is such a thing as the Data Protection Act. It's complicated, so I won't go into details. Basically, you have every right to ask that companies NOT hold your details. If you get a phone call, do not mess around with the poor person making the phone call. You will just get frustrated. Ask to speak to their manager. Right off. "May I speak to your manager?" When you get the manager, ask for his or her name, then ask them to take your details off their database. The manager is obligated to do so. If not, he or she can be reported to be in violation...and they know that.

Companies buy contact details from other companies. If your name disappears off one list, then that can have the opposite effect as your name appearing on another. The object is to get your name off.

    Good luck!

  2. buy a whistle, leave it by the phone and next time you get a nuisance phone call, blow the whistle, really loud down the reciever... that'll soon stop em.

  3. could also ask for free caller display for a couple of months so unless you know the number you do not have to pick up, if you use bt 1571 answer service then anyone who is genuinely trying to get hold of you can leave a message, if the idiot caller does then at least you have some proof. There is a number bt can give you to type in after they call to block the number but they can get crafty and use other phones and public call boxes etc.

  4. Answer the call: "Aston Green Police, state your name and address."

If the calls persist, answer: "This is an automated call tracing service, DO NOT HANG UP!"

    Good luck.

  5. i have a number specific for nuisance calls in my diary in my van, i will e mail it you tommorow, click me as acontact if you want. also is it an 056 no. ? it could be from a skype or voip phone (broadband phone?)

  6. If you look in the phone book you will find the number for "Nuisance-call advisors".

    Freefone 0800 661 441.

This sounds like an autodialler at a telesales company to me.

  7. They will be companies from outside the UK, who are outside of the UK law. I registered with a service called choose to refuse from BT, i think it`s about £3 a month, so after the particular number has called you, type in a code on your phone (they tell you the code when you have joined) and it will block that number from calling you again.

If you happen to be in and answer one, ask them what company they are calling from and report them to TPS, though people are under the misapprehension that TPS can fine companies, they can`t, but they will contact them for you.

  8. it could be someone that has their line rental through  a company other than bt, thats why its not registering.can you not get a phone that show the number calling? then you can just ignore it and they will get fed up!
