  1. Check with the RTA to see if the car isn't stolen.  The RTA will tell you if their records match the owner to the registration or not. If not then alarm bell will start ringing. Also the engine number must match the one on the registration.

The RTA will tell you who pays for the transfer of the rego. Also only a so - called safety certificate is not worth the paper it is written on. This makes me suspect a shonky deal straight away. The only thing that the RTA will accept is a Roadworthy Certificate.

You have to go to a garage and get a registered mechanic to check out you car to make sure that the car is road worthy to have it registered. If someone has told you that it has received a safety certificate and this makes it road worthy they are having you on.

Only a roadworthy certificate is OK for registration. If they have only received a safety certificate then chances are it is not fit to register and you may have to spend a lot of money on it to make it road worthy. It may not even be registered if all they have is this safety certificate. There may be no rego to transfer.

Again check with the RTA. Tell the such - and - such a person is trying to sell you the car and quote the price and make and vintage of the vehicle and the mileage it has done. They may even give you a good idea as to whether it is too much the other party is asking. If the seller won't give you their details to give to RTA then this spells trouble. They are hiding something.

If the car is unregistered, you will have to register it once you get it roadworthy. If it is already registered and roadworthy there should be no expense to you. This is if the vendor is genuine. But it sounds quite doubtful to me.

While you are at it check that the the car engine isn't stolen and that it's engine number matches the rego plates. If this is all OK then and only then should you pay for it. If the seller won't let you do these things and won't give you his/her full details then there may be something suspicious about it.

Don't buy. Don't put up with anything less than a full check-up and find out everything you can before you buy. Even registered can yards get caught with stolen cars.

    Good Luck!!!

  2. Buyer would pay for the transfer fee but not any back fees.

  3. The buyer pays for ("rego"?) registration, yes, both safety and roadworthy certificates mean the same thing. spell check
