  1. Here's a website that gives you weekly p****y reports going on around the world:

    www.icc-ccs.org/prc/piracyreport.php

  2. The problem here is that, in order to have "anti-p****y" equipment capable of repelling a pirate attack, you need to be better armed than said pirate, putting you in the position of explaining to the Coast Guard (or worse, their counterparts internationally) why you have such an arsenal on board.

  3. wow that's funny that's you ask a friend of mine a former navy seal does just this kind of work he hires on for cargo ships and yahtchs that travel to certain parts of the world where there are still modern day pirates he said he likes working yahtchs best he said when they ankor over night he keeps an eye on the radar and if a boat approaches he shoots the boat motor with a 50cal sniper rifle with inferred scope while the boat is 1 mile away and still moving and it destroys the motor on cargo ships they have some kind of dish that sends some kind of sound that stops them dead in there tracks its some kind of top secret thing the military came out with that is very expensive his email is bobbymcguyver@yahoo

  4. Find the guy in the actual world who is a pirate and figure out how not to allow that to happen.

  5. Security at sea is like it is anywhere.  You evaluate the threat, and take steps to prevent those threats.  An ideal situation would be a boat that is fast enough to outrun most pirate vessels.  Since modern pirates tend to favor small/fast boats, this would take a lot of money for this to be feasible.  I saw a 120' (40m) yacht that could do over 80 knots.  It also cost many millions of dollars, so it is well out of the reach of most of us.

Sometimes just speed and zig-zagging is enough.  Boarding a boat which is underway is difficult in calm conditions.  One that is trying to not be boarded, is much harder to get on.  The down side is that the pirates may start shooting to disable the vessel, which often has very bad consequences for the crew of the vessel on the receiving end.

A low tech option is to stay away from areas where pirates "work".  Presently this is mostly Somalia, Nigeria, and the straights of Malacca.  Another important point, don't anchor off bad neighborhoods.  There are parts of the world where they will happily rob boats at anchor.  Cruising guides have a lot of good information here.

Arming yourself is an option, for vessels of US registry and some other countries.  When you enter another countries territorial waters, the rules change.  The problem is that many countries will insist on confiscating your weapons, or at least locking them in a ship's safe with a custom's seal over it while you are in their country.  (If the seal is broken you can be in MAJOR trouble.)  IF you're willing to go through the trouble and you're knowledgable about fire-arm use, this MAY be an option.

Chances are you will not out-gun a pirate, but you may be able to be dangerous enough for him to back off.  Pirates want to live to spend their money.

An intermediate level of defense could be to use non-lethal techniques.  I've heard of the positive and negative terminals of 'stun guns' being wired to alternating strands of guard rail running around a boat, (with fiberglass uprights).  This creates an 'electric fence' effect.  Another technique I've heard is police "area/riot" pepper spray foggers, which tend to get the person using it too.  Both techniques have weaknesses, both tactically and legally, but it is a lot better than accidentally shooting some local boy who's trying to sell or give you some mangoes.
