  1. ive not been but check out the source below it should give you a good idea about the location

  2. Yes it is a very interesting town and surrounding area. History of the Cathars etc. It looks different with interesting buildings nice restaurants etc. December isn't very warm but they don't have frost and very low temps. Could get some rain of course but might well be blue sky's.

  3. My mum and dad have been going every year for the past 6 years. I believe it is beautiful, not sure about December though. Might be a bit cold!!!!!!!!

  4. I live 51 kms from Carcassonne - it can be a bit cool in December usually around 15/18c. If you want a really romantic weekend, book a hotel in La Citie. It is officially part of Carcassonne, but it is also the best preserved Medieval Walled City in Europe and quite magical.

There is a slightly cheaper Hotel Mercury just outside the city walls that is also very very nice. All serve excellent local / international meals.

The Christmas market will be in full swing, and if you are there for a Saturday, the main shopping market will also be open. The city decorations are also much more tasteful than in the UK and quite lovely.

Undoubtedly there will be several forms of entertainment going on (sorry do not have current details) some free, and some with entrance fees of between €5 and €10 per person. The website below may well have all these events listed.

check out carcassonne-tourisme.com for further info on the choice of hotels and events.

With you meal have a bottle of Blanquet de Limoux - this is the 'original' champagne discovered by a local monk. More flavour than Champagne, and from experience, it goes to your head a bit quicker as well!

While the old city can be explored in a day, most people love it so much they go back at least twice. There are absolutely no tourist rip offs that one would expect with a world famous attraction such as this. Meals/snacks/coffee/alcoholic drinks/gifts/souvenirs/etc are much the same price as you will find anywhere else.

You and you wife will love it

PS Nothing will be shut down! (except the old carousel)

  5. I have been and its a lovely walled city, very touristy though and perhaps not the best value....but in a nice area...best to check what is open in December though, things in France have a habit of closing down in Autumn and winter....but it is a romantic place for sure.

  6. Worth a visit, as already recommended, but you can see

all of the old city in half a day.
