Hi! i'm going to india (6mos) and i would like to know what is the best way to carry money?

last time I was there was 12yrs ago, then it was travellers checks and cash. what is the situation now esp in the south like kerala(mysore), thinking of opening an account with citybank there or bank of india because of their atm facilities. any other suggestions?

how much should i expect to recon for food and board-midrange-modest expenses

  1. yes, there are ATMs in all but the smallest towns, it's a good way to keep an emergency supply if you should need it. any bank will do as long as you get one of those visa cards tied to your account.

    us 100 dollar bills are always appreciated. traveler's checks are also fine, american express or thomas cook.


  2. The one precaution I always take is keeping my money on my person while traveling about.  I keep just enough in my pockets for the day and the rest in an inexpensive money belt.

    because in many places they do not accept Credit cards

    and any other money is not safe in India

    only take money you need because if you show Lot's of money they might kill you for your money.

    Big city's are not safe at all/

  4. Use any transfer mode ( banks, xoom.com, remit2india etc) to transfer money. U can open a bank account in India and transfer money using any of the options

    Fooding/ Stay depends where u r staying ..A 5 star hotel can be $150 pr night or a 3 star can be $50-70 per night

  5. Using your debit or credit card, you can withdraw money from thousands of ATMs installed all over India. You won't have any problems in the tourist areas.

    Keep around Rs 5000 on you for various expenses.

    Book your tickets online in advance - both train and air tickets can be booked using your credit card.
