  1. Ranier Maria Rilke has a great answer that she wrote to a young poet about finding his or her passion.

"There is only one thing you should do. Go into yourself. Find out the reason that commands you to write; see whether it has spread its roots into the very depths of your heart; confess to yourself whether you would have to die if you were forbidden to write. This most of all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write? Dig into yourself for a deep answer. And if this answer rings out in assent, if you meet this solemn question with a strong, simple "I must," then build your life in accordance with this necessity; your while life, even into its humblest and most indifferent hour, must become a sign and witness to this impulse."

Find your passion. If any one of those is not your passion, it is  not the right career for you. If you start to turn away from one because it will be more difficult, look again. The right way is seldom the easy way. When you find your passion, your calling, that will be your vocation.

  2. It sounds like you are interested in doing something that will help others (animal or human).  I think you first need to decide whether you would be more comfortable working with animals all day long or adults all day long or children all day long.  And also where each of these careers could take you in 5 or 10 or 15 years.  Personally, I wouldn't worry about which one pays more at this point.

  3. If you are fat ugly and orange, go for beauty therapist job, if you want to be under paid and under valued, be a teaching asst.  Otherwise - vet nurse it is.

  4. Go for a vet nurse.

The animals would probably appreciate you more than human beings would.

  5. Well, what do you enjoy and what do you picture yourself as being in the future? Do you enjoy working with animals? Do you enjoy working with young children? Do you like working with/on people and are you good at beauty therapy?

    Ask these questions to yourself!

  6. Depends on whether you want to train on the job or trains and then get a job.  To be a beauty therapist you need to train at college first.  To be a vet nurse, you need to train on the job and at college, you might be able to do this on day release.  To be a teaching assistant you do not need to do any training, but you can become a higher level teaching assistant and the school will let you do this on day release or evening classes which they wouold pay for.  Go for whatever you feel more comfortable with, not for the money.

  7. Get yourself out there and visit the places you are interested in. Its the best way to tell if you are in the right place.

I would go for TA, I love kids, the money is not great, the job is not easy, but you get os much satisfaction.

I couldn't stand having to help put animals to sleep. I am too soft.

Also I couldn't touch anyone who was a bit minging for beauty therapy (mind I do manage snotty noses on children)

Good luck with what you decide.

  8. How about spending a few weeks to a few months job shadowing or volunteering in each career field?

I spent a summer volunteering at a hospital when I was thinking about pre-med. I had general volunteer duties two days per week and three days I worked with the physical therapy department. It was a fantastic way to get a taste of what it is like in the hospital environment and what iti s like working with sick and injured people.

That was over 20 years ago and it changed my career path in a timely manner. Pre-med has a long training period. I am glad I found out after the very first year that I was too much of a softy to perform the duties that caused pain to others without it bothering me. I could do it, it was just very much in my discomfort zone.

If you would like to explore online teaching, I can be of help for you to get a taste of that. I do volunteer work with Virtual Homeschool Group. It is an online course co-operative where the teachers are all volunteers. You would learn how to set up a course in Moodle, teach in a live online classroom with kids from all over the US and beyond (we have kids from Canada and Brazil too). Let me know if you would like to explore doing it. Just go to http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/. Just use one of the contact e-mail addresses to get in touch with one of the volunteer teachers.
