It is prohibited, never try, otherwise you will be deported. Everything can wait but not education, finish it first and always respect the laws of the land where you are now doing your studies.

You can utlize your option of OPT at any time you wish once you have completed a full academic year. Most people wait until they are just about to graduate before proceeding down this route but you may use it before then.

Just remember that OPT is only valid 12 months (29 if you are in the STEM field) and you can only use it once.
