  1. A typical day for those who work:

      It is up at 4:30 or 5:00am get a shower, eat breakfast and if there are children in the home, get them up and ready for school. If the family or person has a car, then drop the kids off at school and on the way to work. After work, stop off at the store, and then home. If the working person takes the bus, then they have to be out on the street early. My husband for example works in Old San Juan. He leave home at 6:50 to get the 7:10 bus to San Juan, and there will be many at the diverse stops waiting for the bus. Many will take the bus to the train station at Stop 26 to go to work. They leave their cars there or get a ride to the station.

      For those who do not work:

      Well if they are on SSI like me, then I go to doctor appointments, I visit the Carnagie Library in Old San Juan and hang out with a few elderly ladies in the Casino at the Sharaton. If I can I may play a few dollars, but no more. But most of all I will visit all the old historical places of Old San Juan.

      For those who do not work and who are on public help:

      They are either at home or on the street "talking" with other neighbors. Some watch soaps (novelas) all day.

      So you see, depending on if you work, or not or have a car or not, things are different for each person every day.

      For those who live in the country towns and in the mountain areas. Who work, well they have to travel by car or get the public bus.  For those in these country areas that do not work, will spend the day taking care of a few farm animals such as pigs, goats, cows and check the plantain fields and other veggies that they planted. Many in the country who have large lots of land of plantains and other root veggies will leave early at 2 or 3 am to the market place to sell. They go early because the market place opens at 7 am and that is when the ones who have kiosks or stands on the inside sell their roots and veggies. Those who go at 2 or 3 am do not have kiosks inside the market place or plaze de mercado and they sell outside to those who have restaurants and small stores who want to buy in large quantities. ( I used to do this before and was a teacher at the same time.

    Hope this helped you out.

  2. A typical day is more like usual days in the US mainland. You can find out Virgin Islands job on http://www.career.vi should you decide to relocate to the Virgin Islands.

  3. Well, let me tell you about a day for a normal family, a mom, a dad and two elementary school kids.  They have to wake up at 5am, get ready, eat breakfast to be on the road by 6:15am. Listen to the radio morning shows in the possibly 1 or 2 hour commute (depends if there is a trucker strike) to school and work by 8:30am.  Go to work, talk about last nights novelas or about the latest showdown the politicians are having.  Go to lunch, work again, check with your parents to see if they picked up the kids at school, make sure they obey their grandparents and do their homework. At 5pm you leave work, listen to the radio afternoon shows while driving to your parents' house by 6pm to pick up your kids, go home, do some laundry, homework etc, have some dinner brought from your parents', watch some TV and go to sleep.

  4. For who?

    Working people:

    Get up early in the morning, quick breakfast, or will take a breakfast later on the road or at work. Go to work, depending where you live and where you work the trip to the workplace maybe just a few minutes or a couple of hours.  Work.  Then back to home (another traffic jam). Spend night with family and TV.  If protestant christian attend night church services about two times a week, ussually 7:30 - 9:00 pm (besides sunday morning).

    Other variations:

    Insert school kids in the schedule: Help them prepare to school, drop them in the school and the rush to work.  Pick them at school after work (or arrange grandfathers to do that).  Help them with school work, projects.

    Insert little kids in the schedule:

    Add a trip to grandma house to leave the baby there because Mom also work in a manufacturing plant or at a store.  If granny is not available, then to the daycare center.

    If both parents go to work the one who start later take the kids to school and daycare center.

    If young / single woking person they may hangout after work with coworkers or friends.  Also maybe attending to university two or three night / week.  They may also attend to a quick workout in the gym before work.

    Kids:

    Get up, prepare for school, breakfast (perhaps at school), school, then variations come:

    * Walk home or to granny house until parents get out of work.  Maybe granddaddy picks them at school.

    * Play videogames, play at the streets with pals, watch cartoons or other TV / cable options.

    * Mom arrive: time to school homework., dinner, a little more TV, then to bed.

    Women:

    * Insert some house chores, cooking dinner, during the night or any other available time. If not it will be a marathon for the saturday.  Kids (specially girls) are hired as assistants.

    If the woman does not work out of the home:

    After returning from school where she leaved the kids, return to the house for housework and to see latinoamerican TV soap operas (telenovelas) or take care of things like:

    * shopping,

    * pay the bills,

    * go to the bank,

    * groceries,

    * doctors visits,

    * take granny out and take her to where ever she needs to go.
