  1. It's not like you're telling them that, in fact, Mum and Dad, you have an overwhelming physical passion for farm animals and they need to meet your new girlfriend, Buttercup.  I'm pretty sure they'll get over it.

In all seriousness, wargaming - and, specifically, the Games Workshop branch of the hobby that includes Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 - is a constructive and valuable hobby.  Not only is it excellent for assisting the development of your mathematical skills (not only totting up your army list, but calculating probabilities in your head) and English skills (who can resist writing detailed and imaginative background stories for their armies?), but will also lead you into some excellent craft and design projects when it comes to building terrain and gaming tables.  I learnt most of my DIY skills from wargaming projects and now I'm fitting a new kitchen on my own!

Moreover, joining a wargaming club can be an excellent strategy for teaching young players independence and self-confidence, as everyone is equal on the tabletop and I enjoy seeing kids at my club taking on and defeating veterans two or three times their age on a regular basis.

It can also be an unexpected pathway into a career.  After seven years in the Army, I've now retired to be a full-time writer and Games Workshop's publishing arm, the Black Library, has published my first professional story in the new "Planetkill" anthology.

At the end of the day, it's better than leaving you to hang out on street corners and get into fights, and more sociable than sticking you in front of a PS3.

  2. My son is 13 and does a lot of Warhammer modeling and playing, along with numerous friends.  They all have a great time.  I had a whole gang of them over for a day to make and play, and they had a fantastic time.

It's no sillier than a lot of other hobbies, and a lot better than some!

  3. I was just at the game store today and there were 4 people playing Warhammer.  Two guys around 15-16, one guy around 24-25, and a girl around 20.  Its not a silly hobby, no matter the age.

I've been playing since I was around 12.

    I'm now 34 and I STILL play.
