Hi i now know that the petrol/oil mix for a 2 stroke 30-35hp is 50 to 1 so if i mixed a gallon of petrol?

Go Metric.

1 gallon = 4.5L = 4500ml.  1:100 = 45ml per 4.5L, so 1:50 = 2x45ml = 90ml per 4.5L.

If you go for the one capful per gallon, make sure that is the standard imperial capful.  Almost certainly much less than 1:50, so long term it will reduce the engine life.

The way I was taught to do it was is cap full of oil to a gallon drum of petrol. Nothing has ever blown up or caught fire, so it works :0)

New to this..

but I mix a bottle (maybe a pint or so size) oil made to mix with 6 gallons of gas.

My motor is also 2stroke 35hp. This was the direction from the motor place.

Go to a parts store or a marina and buy the little six pack of 2 cycle oil and read what it says on the bottle.

it will say on the side of the bottle if you by a marine outboard oil mix the amount of oil is between the graduations

I use the same mix for my dinghy (tender) outboard. If it helps you any, you may like to try what I do. I work on 5litres instead of a gallon. 5 litres is just a little bit over a gallon, but that volume does fit into a gallon jerry can.

At 50:1, I simply divide 5000ml (5 litres) by 50 which gives me an oil volume of 100ml.

Whole numbers are quicker and easier to apply practically, I find.
