  1. They are approximately 4 times as efficient as the standard incandescent lamps they are designed to replace.  They are designed to be, physically, the same size as the incandescent bulbs they replace -- including having the same base and the same operating voltage.

The base of the cfl contains an electronic ballast that produces the necessary high voltage to start the fluorescent tube.  In my experience, I have seen a high rate of failure of electronic ballasts.  The fluorescent tubes might be designed to last a long time, but the electronics are apparently not.

CFLs tend not to work well in cold temperatures.  They will either not operate, at all, or they will be very hard to start.

The cost of cfls are much higher than incandescent lamps, but through more mass production the costs are coming down.  You may be able to get rebates from government agencies and  your local power company when you buy them.
