Hi I'm a American & I want to see London is all about. If I plan to stay there for several months, what do I need to get a job? Like working @ a nice restaurant? And would I get paid more if I'm Spanish influente? Thank you & cheers!

  1. Hi, forget the legal stuff, if you want to come here and work I'm sure you'll find some cash waiting or bar tending work. You get 3 months in the UK each time you enter so you may have to do the odd visa run over to France to renew. Spanish is not really in demand here and would not bring you an increased income. Have you organised a place to stay? Do you have anyone here? These things make the start up so much easier. I lived illegally in the US for 3 years (I'm english) never had any trouble at all. I can't see any reason why people from countries such as ours need to complicate things with visas and work permits, it's hardly like we're soming in from the third world with no intention of leaving eh!  are you male or female. It's always easier for a female as there is the Au Pair option to get you started, that's what I did for the first year, 20 years later I'm still friends with my host family. Good luck

  2. you would not get paid more for speaking spanish but there are plenty of legal an 'tax free jobs in london . you will not have a problem finding work but accommodation is expensive

this site can give you an idea of jobs and accommodation

  3. As I live in London, I would say you would be made to feel incredibly welcome.  And as you are fluent in Spanish, a job at a Mexican or Spanish themed restaurant is not out of the question.  Or as a translator for one of the many tour guides.

But you aren't a member of the EU, so of course its going to be harder.

  4. You can't stay longer than 90 days on a tourist visa and you can't WORK on a tourist visa.

You need a work visa to work in London and you need to get that by finding a London company that will swear they are hiring you because they can't find a local brit to do your job... and THEY will file the paperwork for you to get your work visa.

You DO know that London is one of the most expensive cities in the world.. I assume?  You will need a minimum of $1500 per month just to find a cheap room in a cheap hotel and buy food.

  5. for a Non EU citizen to work in the UK, you have to offer us a skill we are in need of in this country, and i'm afraid, i don't think working in a restaurant is quite a high skilled job we are in need of.

You would need a Visa if you plan to stay over 6months, you would need a work permit, and a job before you arrived.

but you have to go through a points system to get Visa's to work, were only high skilled workers will get through

and i'm afraid the working holiday Visa which alot of people who want to work for short periods apply for is not open to U.S citizens (or it wasnt last time i checked) it's generally only available to British Commonwealth countries.
