  1. If it's drawn on a bank other than an American one you can use it.  The only time I've seen an ATM was at a bank in Varadero, it wasn't working so the guard took us inside to obtain an advance from a teller.  Maybe it never worked, I have no idea,  but you can obtain cash advances using credit cards at your resort

  2. Capital One is a US based financial institution - almost certainly you will not be able to use it in Cuba. (I know that MBNA Europe and HFC Bank credit cards don't work).

PS it is NOT illegal for Cubans to have covertible pesos - most Cubans regularly use them.

  3. Yes, you can use credit cards throughout the world.

  4. You can use your Capital One credit card as long as it's not a US based card. I believe, Capital One may be a credit card from a US based financial institution.

However, if I remember correctly, you are from the UK and the Capital One card you'll be using will most likely be from a UK based financial institution...so you should be safe.

Just double check with the card company...they'll for sure direct you properly.

There are ATMs in Santa Maria...it will depend on the resort you stay at. If the one you're at doesn't have one, then there will be another resort your hotel  makes arrangements with for you to be able to go.

Palacio O'Farrill Hotel has an ATM and banks, etc.

However, just be prepared for it to either be very slow or not work as it depends on the lines on any given day. Our tour rep said that sometimes these things work fine and then there will be days that it may be extremely slow or have bad connection. Then it may be better to get a cash advance if that happens.

A quote from a link below:

"Many banks will tell you that your debit card will be accepted in Cuba when in fact it will not. Do not rely on ATMs for cash as you may be used to in other countries. Have enough currency or travellers cheques when you enter the country to get by, if necessary. "

**Edit: ah okay so Capital One is ONLY US based. I wasn't sure with one of the sites that it would be under a UK institution (as MasterCard is also American-based but branched also under Canadian ...did I confuse anyone yet? LOL)

    Glad for the clarification.

  5. if you are American or your credit card is issued by an American bank it is against American law to spend any money in Cuba. Your card will not work and you will be open to arrest and prosecution upon return to the States.

Any tourist form any country has to buy whats known as non convertible peso...money issued by the Cuban government for just foreign tourists use. It is against Cuban law for ordinary Cubans to have these pesos. So probably no on the ATMs.
