It depends on the level you work at.

Shop floor merchandisers ensure that the shelves are filled, that the store looks nice, and the stock is at the front of the shelves (called faceing up). They may also (depending on the company) be asked to build shelving.

merchandisers working at the companys head office are more skilled and required to plan product ranges, analise buying trends etc.
