Hi is it better to haul furniture OR to buy it in Mexico?

Question

I will be living in Merida or beach home Yucatan, from USA and driving down. Can I find furniture cheaply? don't want to furnish w antiques unless cheap as locking up house for half a year...thanks

Buy you furniture in Mexico. Even if you order it from the U S. The dollar is weak and the taxes will be less if you make the purchase in pesos.

I am going to say that furnishing it locally will be both cheaper and more satisfying as the home will have a local flavor if you use crafts from the many local artisans and you will not have the hassle of dealing with customs and potentially issuing a bribe through some third party guy that waits outside the office so as not to be videotaped receiving the bribes. This is a jab from personal experience when trying to ship some nice clearance items I found here in the USA once (I am not bitter LOL). The aduana guy asks us how much we think it is worth (even though the stuff still had sales tags on it) and then said he would make it easier for everyone by just quoting x amount and we might just help out buy giving his friend some money for "carrying" our stuff for us! Anyways, I am sure that you can find some really nice hand carved furniture and stuff made from local wood, as well as paintings, pottery, and glass and metal work crafts to make a beautiful home.

definitely haul it...

i tried furnishing an apartment in Guadalajara it cost a fortune and it looked like c**p

if you have an Ikea around you they'll definitely come in handy

+ try renting a car/truck that will allow you to return the car in Yucatan

I say find the furniture you like, if its in the US then haul it, if its Mexico no need, consider this however, many companies will ship it to you in Mexico, even though they are US based....its a global economy now.
