Hi I am 23 yrs old & I want to take self defense class. When I was 13 yrs old, I use to take Kick Boxing for 2 yrs & I was paying $62 a month. So is it worth paying $150 a month for Grav Maga classes? I do take self defense class seriously but, I am just a student & I am not a body guard or cop. What you think? If I do take Grav Maga, I was thinking taking it for 2 yrs or more. It depends on school. Thank you.

  1. NO!! you can do a real ma for that much money.

  2. It's only acceptable if the school is really in the middle of downtown New York.

I've only seen inside 3 Krav Maga schools, I have to say that all 3 are very McDojo-ish.

Truth be told, while Krav Maga is very well known after some movies are using it for their main actresses, Krav Maga outside the IDF itself is very watered down version.

Krav Maga, being a military martial art, won't prepare it's practitioner for a fight against another MA practitioner, it's mainly designated to be a short, effective training for people who don't put most of their training career in MA but in physical training and shooting range.

I believe you can find lots of other schools for much less money. Some of them will actually benefit you much more than Krav Maga.

  3. Well, i think it's kind of expensive, at my kenpo club, it's like 300$ a year, so yeah, you may want to find another club.

  4. actually thats pretty expensive where i live its on $80 a month with a 1 year contract. so you might want to look fo another place to train.

  5. Personally I think that $150 is to high. My biggest problem is not just the price but qualifications.  Having been heavily involved in the study (since 1967)and teaching (since 1973) of various martial arts I'm concerned about a trend I'm seeing. Krav Maga and many other similar arts have become very popular in the last few years. There are schools for these new arts popping up everywhere.  I know for a positive fact that it takes at least ten or more years to train someone to become a qualified teacher.  My point is that just a few years ago most of these arts were basically unknown to most of us in the martial arts world.   I can't see how there can be enough really qualified instructors to run all these new schools.  I'd be ware   when checking out any martial arts school. Even more so with these new arts.

through the last 40 years I have seen new fad martial arts come every few years. With each new wave come a lot of impostors. Some are good enough to fool most people. In any case Don't just take someones word that they are qualified.

  6. For that much money, they better have a great facility, have daily classes, and TONS of open mat times. If not, it sounds like a ripoff.

  7. Costs of various schools and styles always differs.  In my area you'll pay every bit of $1,200 per year or more  that's a $100 or more per month to learn Karate, judo, kung fu, and basically all schools run near the same. Cheaper in some areas and way more in others.  That's just simple economics.  Krav Maga is a d**n good art form so I'd say definately yes it is worth it very much so and you're paying about the national average to learn the system you're learning. Stick with it and don't let anyone change your mind.

  8. Thats too much I know you can find a cheaper place. Shop around first.

  9. rite now is actually the wors time to join a Krav Maga school ...just the other day my school got a Krav Maga DVD sayin i can be certified in no time and teach in no time...its to increase  adult attendance i thik its bs anyways... and btw this no joke i can give photo shots of the CD and letter enclosed unless i threw it away lol
