  1. Yes there can be... this requires the use of a receiver that can handle HD audio.  There are audio formats called Dobly Digital TrueHD, DTS HD, and PCM uncompressed that offer uncompressed sound.  It needs to be transfered through an HDMI cable though. Also, if you do not have high quality speakers you might not really notice the quality difference in the audio. Blu-ray can support up to 7 channels of audio. If you go to some stores like best buy or circuit city (depending on your location) they will sometimes have an audio demo set up to show you the difference.

  2. Yes a big difference.  Regular DVD is encoded with Dolby Digital at 448 kbps while DTS is encoded at 760 kbps.

Bluray is encoded with a minimum of 1.5Mbps with Dolby Digital Plus and up to 24 Mbps with DTS-HD or PCM Lossless.  This depends on the encoding done.  Right now lossless is around 7.8 Mbps for most Bluray movies encoded with PCM lossless.

Here is the difference as best as I can explain it.  With regular DVD you hear rain falling around you, with Lossless audio you hear every single raindrop hitting the ground.

With regular DVD you can hear a pin drop with lossless audio you can hear the echo reverberation of the air that the pindrop made when it hit the groud.

It really enhances the overall sound quality and although once the human ear gets past 1.5 Mbps it gets harder and harder to tell the higher audio quality codecs, it is waaaay better than regular DVD audio.

Also there are already some movies like Rambo that are 7.1 discrete channels where regular DVD is limited to DTS-ES which is six channels and the sixth channel is a matrix of the fourth and fifth channel and not discrete like Bluray.
