Hi me and my husband live in the UK and are looking for the best places to live in Canda?

We are looking for a quiet friendly location away from the hustle and bustle. We don't know much about Canada so would like to know the places to look and places to avoid?

Theres a lot of nice citys outside of Toronto, ontario.  they are more family oriented and quite.  Yet are close to many work oppertunities.  Try maybe Burlington or Oakville, Ontario.  I'd advoid any major cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Winnipeg etc.

anyways leamington ontario was awarded the best place to live in canada in 2006

it is somewhat small but not too small it has everything you need, jobs available and it is like less then an hour from the states

it has a population of around 29 000 so yeah it is def small

if you don't want to move there i'd still try to find somewhere in ontario i believe it's the best province in canada

i would not recommend anywhere really in alberta, yes you get more money for jobs there a lot of jobs available but if you were to buy a 2 bedroom house over there that isn't even that great it would be like 500 000 canadian dollars because of all the people moving over there for jobs, pretty much everything there is more expensive groceries etc.

Obviously you need to avoid large cities, but small towns can be troublesome too.  People in small towns can be terribly withdrawn and leave you feeling like social pariahs.  I would suggest doing some research first.  Jobs?  Your best bet is Alberta, but the cost of living there is high and finding any kind of shelter will be long and difficult.  The maritimes are known for high unemployment, but housing is easier to come by.  Do you like cool and rainy weather all year round?  You'll find that in BC.  Do you like extreme weather and temperature changes?  Try the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.  Consider mid-size cities such as Chiliwack, BC; Red Deer, AB; Saskatoon, Sask; Brandon, MB; Thunder Bay, ONT; all of the maritime provinces and parts of Montreal (anglo communities).  These are mid-size cities with populations between 30 000 and 400 000, lots to do, good for the kids, and not too far removed from larger centres with better venues.

Coming to Canada to live depends on a variety of factors, including age, skills, size of family, as well as others.

Likewise, where you settle here in Canada depends on job opportunities, lifestyle, language skills, and other factors.

For example, if you are still working, you will likely want to find a home that is located near your place of employment, so you try to finda job based on your skills first, then pick a city or town near that job that suits your family.

On the other hand, if you are retired and simply want a change of pace, you can pretty much pick anywhere in Canada that you would want. In that case, it depends more on what you enjoy doing for fun. If you enjoy golf, you may choose a town near several major golf courses. If you like to ski or hike, you probably will choose something in Alberta or B.C. to get the Rocky Mountains to explore.

British Columbia

- Beautiful countryside

- Great weather most of the year, mild winters

- Expensive to live in Vancouver or Victoria area.

- High crime rates reported in some Vancouver suburbs.

- Small towns near Kamloops or Kelowna may be less stressful and less expensive

Alberta

- Growing prairie communities

- Weather changes at the drop of a hat. Chinook winds means 6" of snow in morning may be 75F degrees by afternoon.

- Small prairie towns are close-knit, after 10yrs you may still be the "British" family up the street.

- Great skiing and hiking around Banff or Jasper area

- Calgary expensive and expanding its hustle-bustle.

- Edmonton is large and has higher crime rates

Saskatchewan/Manitoba

- Less glamorous than other provinces

- Mostly agricultural based - wheat, dairy, beef farms

- less expensive to live than in other provinces

- High suicide and crime rate in north Winnipeg area, mainly among First Nations people.

Ontario

- Central part of Canada

- Federal government located in Ottawa area

- Toronto is one of largest cities in Canada, and hosts many corporate headquarters.

- If you do NOT want hustle-bustle, do not go to Toronto core area. Pick a suburb like Port Perry or Belleville.

- Niagara Falls in the area

- Busiest airport (Pearson) in Canada offers flights to many international locations, in case you plan to return to UK often.

Quebec

- Main Francophone province in Canada

- West Island community offers quieter neighbourhoods with larger English base.

- Consider if you speak French or are willing to learn.

Atlantic Provinces

- New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland all have their own cultural differences and beautiful oceanside views.

- Milder winters due to proximity to ocean, but cooler all year round.

- In general, costs are lower for housing, taxes, and food. Halifax is one of the main shipping ports in the area.
