  1. If you have forced air heat, you can use the existing duct system to deliver cooled air. However, installing a central AC system isn't something for amateurs: a compressor has to be installed outdoors and an airhandler indoors (associated with the existing furnace). Also, the size of the AC components is critical and should be based on a heat gain calculation that takes specialized knowledge.

Here's a summary of what to consider when adding a central AC system to your home:

  2. You must retrofit the furnace with an AC unit.  I did it myself for about $700.  An HVAC company will want about $2000+

  3. have a hvac specialist install an ac unit.  theres pretty much nothing else you can do by yourself

  4. There are 2 main components to an ac unit.  the first component is the outside condenser.  this unit also contains the compressor for your refrigerant.  the next large piece of equipment is the indoor air coil.  this piece is basically a radiator that the has cold refrigerant inside so when the blower on your furnace kicks on it blows air across the indoor coil and cools down.

I would suggest hiring an hvac professional to install this equipment for you as you will need to run electric to the outdoor unit and various other things.
