  1. Genevieve's mom was right on, and did not deserve a thumbs down.

I looked at the social security death index for any Mitchell who died in Jackson co, Miss. and none of those names match what you gave.  You HAVE to have some kind of a time frame, in order to define which sources can be used to find the info. Example.. your grandmother might have died in 1982, or she could have died in 1902.  THIS IS CRITICAL to knowing what and where to search.  Not to mention.. that grandma is a Mitchell by marriage, and she might have remarried and died under a different name.

You need to define the facts regarding your father (birth/death, etc). If dad was born in 1925, he should be findable in 1930 census. If born 1935.. it will not show, since that is the latest census open.  The same is true for grandma. The records you need to build on, may not be online.

If you can provide any solid dates.. we can probably find something, or explain what you need to do, to find it.

This is going to be true for ALL the people in your family.

  2. I will give you some search tips:

    http://www.ellisisland.com/ellis_home.ht... for recent immigrants (1892 - 1954) and:

You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history.  Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department.  Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc.  Our public library has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com free for anyone to use (no library card required).

Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers.  They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you).

A third option is one of the following websites:

    http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

    http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

    http://www.usgenweb.com/

    http://www.census.gov/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://www.ukgenweb.com/

    http://www.archives.gov/

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    http://www.geni.com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example.

    Good luck and have fun!

Check out this article on five great free genealogy websites:

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA.

I used www.familytreedna.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program.

I have had so many experiences with people with the same name and born the same time/place but being 2 different people.  Only YOU can make the determination as to whether someone is your ancestor or not.

  3. If you have dates of birth and death on them, it would help us tremendously. As it stands, I can't find anything on them. It's especially odd that "alfozio" doesn't show up anywhere in Mississippi in census or military records. Is it possible they were born after 1930?

  4. you'd be best to try a more local approach - try writing a letter to the local paper and seeing if anyone in the area can help. also contact the records office there

  5. There are 118 Mary Mitchells in the 1930 census in MS.

Do you have any more clues?  Dates?  Children's names?
