Hi I just bought "Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End" on a Blu-ray format & it is NOT playable to my PS3 (40gb)? I just bought my PS3 (40gb) last week & now this d**n region codes?

Yes Blu-ray may won the battle of the Hi-Def format war against HD-DVD but, at least HD-DVD does NOT have region codes or file 1.0,1.1 or 2.0 not like Blu-ray! What should I do?

  1. The previous response sounds unhelpful, but actually isn't unreasonable.

Region codes are one of the several things I hate about Blu-ray (The other main one being BD+) and part of why it is unfortunate HD DVD lost (although HD DVD would have been forced to adopt region coding if it had won!)

POTC: Worlds End is indeed "region locked" (See listing at the link). The last link has some info on region locking (and unlocking).

There are several options (but the first is really the only practical one I suspect):

    - Sell or return the disk and ONLY buy non-region coded (or your region coded) disks (base decision on the linked list).  You aren't missing anything ... the movie is all special effects we've seen before and a confusing, unsatisfactory story. 5/10.

    - Find a hack for the PS3 to remove region coding ... I don't know of one though.

    - The only other way I'm aware of is to play the disk on a PC or Laptop with a Blu-ray drive and use software that removes the region coding. This is an expensive and complicated method ... in my view not worth the trouble (particulalry for a bad movie).

My solution is to simply stick to DVD on a good upscaling DVD player. Cheaper and much less expensive.

    Cheers.

  2. Sell your Bluray movie at ebay or Amazon and buy another one just to see whether the problem is with the bluray or your ps3
