Question:

Hi-point 9mm handgun?

I just got the gun about a week and satisfied with it so far. The only problem I got with it is when it jams, maybe because of the way I put my ammo in the mag or I don't know. How would other guns like s&w, glock, taurus, and etc compare to the hi-point?

  1. Since you are saying you are experiencing jamming issues, I am going to hazard a guess that this is your first semi-automatic weapon. One of the primary causes of jamming a semi-automatic is not holding the weapon with a firm grip and having it break the wrist when it fires.

When it breaks the wrist back, this does not allow the slide to be pushed all the way back as it is intended to, thus causing a shorter travel stroke to feed the round from the magazine into the chamber. Which leads to the jam.

Before I changed weapons, I would go to a local target range, with an NRA Pistol Instructor on staff and ask them to assist you in getting your grip correct.

If you decide to change weapons, don't take our words on what is the best weapon. Once again, go to a GOOD gun shop, and TOUCH the weapons. Do they feel RIGHT in your hand? If not, it probably won't work for you. If it does, see if you can't put some rounds down range with it. Then, find another weapon, and do the same thing. THEN make your decision.

I personally have a Smith and Wesson, a Baretta, and two Taurus (one a semi automatic, one a revolver.) I have held Sig Sauers in my hands, they don't work for me. I use a Glock when I do transports for my job, they are ok. The Springfield Armory one is SOOO sweet.

Just my thoughts on this issue.

  2. Your handgun is a good weapon. Go to a target range or gun store and get some firearms training.

  3. Hi-point handguns are extremely cheap and that is reflected in their build quality and reliability. As someone above me said, they are decent guns if you want to put holes in targets, but that is about all they are good for.

S&W, Glock, Sig, Springfield, ect all make far more reliable handguns. You will pay more for them, but I've shot Glocks for years now and have had one jam...Out of thousands of rounds.

  4. Just like with anything else, you get what you pay for; stick with name brands and you will get a better quality of product.  Check out what cops carry in their holsters across the country and be guided by that.

  5. they always jam.... they are cheap, its good for the range, thats about it..... its better then nothing but to bet my life on it.... its worth 500 bucks to get a nice hand gun, check out the new Springfield XDM series, they are really nice, if you are on a budget check out a used glock or my favorite a Ruger P-89 9mm I picked mine up for 329.99 and its one of my fav's 18 rd mags and dependable as can be

  6. Sorry, the Hi-Point is doing exactly what was made to do...Jam. It might be because you are limp wristing (not controlling the recoil or anticipating the shoot too soon) when you shoot, but most likely it is because it is a hi-point.  When it comes to reliability and such the hi-point does not come close to comparing to Glock, Taurus, Ruger, Beretta, Springfield Armory, Walther, Sig, etc. And I actually left S&W out because I have had issues with their semi-autos as well. Great revolvers though.

I have heard too many horror stories about them and definately would not buy one that would be used to protect my family or myself.

You could go to gunbroker.com and find many good reliable handguns for desent prices. I have seen some Taurus semi-autos for under $300. If you want a list of links on some of the firearms let me know.
