we had a huge logging industry on vancouver island , along with a big fishing fleet .

now we have just a small lumber market ( mills ) and few boats .

we now rely on tourism and a great sport fishing business along with many seniors retiring here as the cost of living is not to high .

how about your area and the changes time has brought ?

thanks and have a good day . d.

  1. Goodwill store, dollar stores, payday check cashing bus., lots a fast food bus., thrifts stores all over the place.

  2. none there all supermarkets now~]

  3. A little more than 20 years ago the coal mining industry was huge in the town in Wales that I was born in. It was the decline of this industry that prompted my dad to make the career choices and travel choices he did which ultimately made my life a lot better. The town I was born in has gone down hill a bit and it is a rough area to live in these days.

  4. I live in a small town and the county has tourism.  This is (was more) a farm area, we have walnuts, grapes, and pears.  Most of the walnut orchards are gone and more grapes have gone in for the wine markets, but they find they can't sell the grapes any longer.  Pears are going out too the pear sheds use to work around the clock but no more.  We have no large industries at all and we could use them.

People have to commute to a larger city that is 70 miles away, and that would be twice a day just to work.  How do they afford it?

  5. 15 yeaers ago

  6. The same as it was then. Tourism. I live in a large town on the south coast of England that has 7 miles of golden sands and clean beach awards so that's still our main industry.

  7. Dizz - 15-20 years ago we had a lot of industry in this town.  But (mostly) since 9/11 they have disappeared.   We had a huge plant (Lily Tulip) that made paper cups and plates,  many more engineering companies that ACTUALLY  built engines and stuff.  Now all gone, along with Montgomery Ward,  Famous Barr (replaced by Macy's).  Many companies have outsourced to Mexico and other places.    The unemployment in this town is not TOO bad, but I know that I would not want to be looking for a job right now!    Good Q.  have a star!                CJ

  8. Lots of high tech companies.
