  1. I am credentialed in geosciences (what we call earth science here in California) That is one of my 4 subject areas that is listed on my credential.

What you need is your BS. get your undergraduate degree - then enter and finish your credentialing coursework. Once you are ready to take your subject matter verification tests - just take as many as you feel qualified for - they will then all be listed on your credential.

Remember to research the job market - some subjects are more in demand than others.

  2. In most cases, as long as you complete a major (typically 36 college credits) in a particular area, you will be able to teach in that area, provided you also complete the teacher education portion as well.

For example, if you want to teach high school physics, you should major in physics education.

  3. Math Guy is correct about units, but many schools need teachers who can teach several of the science areas.  You would have an easier time getting a job and be more valuable if you had a major in your field and a minor in another area in science.  Call a local school district and ask for an appt. with their human resource dept.  Ask them where there are science needs for high school teachers.  Also ask your college where students are most needed.
