  1. Trench warfare is where they would build deep trenches on each sides of the battlefield and fire from each trench.  it really didn't benefit the soldiers because it made it very hard to advance troops.  the land in between the two trenches was called the "No mans Land" because you usually wouldn't come back from it

  2. Trench dug to protect troopers from machine guns and artillery. trench's had machine gun posts and light artillery for extra defense. Result was mobile warfare stopped, war of attrition started. Massed infantry attacks tried and failed.  Stalemate sets in and other means of war tried- the aerial bombardment of trench rear lines and cities started. The engineers get to try some poison gas and mortars. Other fronts tried as flanking attack- Africa, ottoman empire- more men lost. Final invention of armored mobile machine gun and light cannon vehicle- the Tank- lets successful attacks on trench's succeed and mobile warfare to become possibility again. Exhausted Germans start talking ceasefire and surrender, Spanish Flu hits about same time and kills some more weakened troops and hungry weakened civilians- fighting stops on continental Europe for 20 years while next generation gets trained and improvements made in tanks and planes to avoid trench warfare again.

  3. i dont know :(

  4. German and BEF forces met in belgium and France, where the land is incredibly flat. Both sides had machine guns and the first few days of fighting had a massive death toll. Both sides dug down just to protect themselves and this caused a deadlock between the sides. Any offensive launched would result in thousands of casualties and little or no land gained.

Trenches were built in a zig-zag pattern, so that if an enemy came "over the top" successfully and attacked your trench, they would be trapped in one zig, surrounded by opposition.

Neither side knew how to fight using trench warfare as it had never happened on this scale before. This is why you get seemingly pointless attack orders issued so frequently.
