hi there my car is going crazy ok i have a 1989 Oldsmobile cutless ciera 4 door it has a 3.3 engine i believe. the car first started out with the check engine light coming on and off well while the check engine light is on the speedometer and tachometer aren't working and it would sound like it was choking or putting. and that would come on and off and when the check engine light wasn't on the speedometer and everything else worked and the car drove great. well now its really werid half the times if my foot isn't on the gas it stalls out and shuts off and i have to put my foot on the gas to keep it running then the half of the time it is giving it self alot of gas and is loud and revved up and if my foot isn't on the brake it drives it self so it must be giving to much gas then the other half of the time not giving enough what could be doing this....?

  1. This day comes eventually. Time for a newer car. When you drive a new car, you'll be surprised they have come over the years.

I think you have a couple of things going here. But the first and most important thing you can do is to retrieve the Diagnostic Trouble Codes. This will direct your search for a cause.

You can use the "flash" method of retrieving the codes or you can ask a service department to read them for you with a scanner or code reader. There may ge a chance that a discount parts store may read them for you if they have one of the older style code readers. Most of the stores have code readers for 1996 and later. Call around and tell them what year and make you have and they will tell you if they can read the codes or not.

Once you identify the circuits or components responsible for the codes, perform PROPER DIAGNOSTICS. Don't assume that replacing a part will cure the problem.

  3. I would check the ecm. also inspect all under hood and under dash wiring for corrossion or fraying.Ford used to have a wiggle test. for your car just start it put the park brake on and start pulling lightly on wiring harnesses if you notice a change then I would inspect that area closely. good luck.

  4. have a good mechanic or electrical shop check it out.  This sounds too complicated for an online question.  How many miles does it have?

It may have used up all of its good years.
