Having spent a month in Laos I would say pretty much anywhere.

If you want city lifestyle got to Vientiene although this was my least favourite place in Laos.

If you want fun got to Vang Viene where you can go tubing down the river which has bars on either side and restaurante playing Friends , Family Guy or Simpsons 24/7.

For culture I would recommend Luang Prabang in the north (a few hours north of Vang Viene. It's very French inspired and has a cool little night market.

If you want isolation and peace I would head to the Four Thousand Islands (Si Phan Don) in the south, on the border of Cambodia.

I stayed on Don Det for a week and was so chilled I didnt even realise I had been there that long. The plus is it is peaceful and cheap (I think I paid about £1 / $2 US per night for accommodation in Mr B's bungalows) but the down side is there is no Mod cons... at all.

They have electricity for about 3 hours a day before sun set and the showers are water straight from the Mekhong river.

The benefits are that you can laze in a hammock all day and get to see the best sunset that I have ever seen.
