    Tote is short for 'totalisator' (US spelling totalizator). It was the machine originally used to calculate the betting dividends and the 'tote board' displayed them.

  3. The Tote is the Government owned bookmaker, which operates "pool betting". This works just like the National Lottery - when the operator takes a commission from the pool of betting money and splits the balance between the number of winners.

    These winnings are declared as dividends which include a £1 stake - so if you had a £2 winning tote bet and the divi was £4.60, you would collect £9.20.
