what's the difference between E and ä

as in spÄt and sprEchen

do u german pronounce ö and ü as in french

ö as eux in heureux

ü as u in lu/bu/rue

    The ä in spät is pronounce like the English word 'ate'. You would say it like, "schpate".

    The e in sprechen is pronounced like the e in the English word 'met'. You would say it like, "schpr-eh-chen.

    As for the vowel o, in "schön" (means beautiful, pretty) the ö is pronounced like "eux" in French.

    And the o in "schon" is pronounced like the o in the English word "phone". So since this word does not have the umlaut over the o, the meaning of the word is completely different, it means "already/yet"

    For the vowel u, in Fuss (foot) the u is pronounced like the u in the English word "push".

    In Füsse (feet), the ü is pronounced like the English word "spoon" or like you said, lu/bu/rue.
