Hibernian assistant manager says offer was too good to turn down
New Hibernian assistant manager Derek Adams says that the opportunity to join the Scottish Premier League side was one which he could not afford to pass up.
The 35-year-old left his position as manager of Scottish First Division side Ross County to take up the post under Colin Calderwood.
While he admitted he harbours ambitions of stepping into the hot seat at a top SPL club one day, he felt that the chance to help Hibs achieve success in the top flight was an opportunity he could not turn down.
He told the BBC that: "I got the phone call from (Calderwood) and I then spoke with the chairman and the chief executive. And I was delighted when they gave me the opportunity to join here. The lure was too much for me to turn down. I always want to be a
manager in the SPL and I want to be a manager in the SPL in my own right and that will happen in time.”
Adams insists that he did not apply for the manager's position at Hibs after former manager John Hughes was dismissed in October, but revealed that he had rejected offers from other SPL clubs to become their boss.
While he was reluctant to mention specific names, Kilmarnock and St Mirren were both in search of a boss over the summer before appointing Mixu Paatelainen and Danny Lennon respectively.
Adams added that: "I had the chance to go, but the clubs I had the opportunity to go to were not the right clubs. They didn't have the finance to go forward and they didn't want to be played the way I wanted to go forward."
The former Aberdeen and Burnley midfielder saw his profile skyrocket after leading County to promotion from the Second Division and then to the Scottish Cup final last season, but suffered disappointment at Hampden Park as his former side were defeated 3-0
by SPL outfit Dundee United in the showpiece match.
