Hibernian boss ready to raid transfer market
Despite claiming that he is pleased with the squad he has at his disposal, new Hibernian manager Colin Calderwood says that he will delve into the transfer market when it reopens for business in January to boost his options.
The 45-year-old joined the club after John Hughes’ departure, returning to his homeland from English Premier League side Newcastle United, where he had been assistant boss.
After spending several years working in England, Calderwood is keen to make take advantage of the contacts he has made there.
He told reporters that: "It's a market that is more familiar to me. The advantage up here (in Scotland) is it's top-level football, compared to a league or two below down there."
Former Northampton boss Calderwood has declared himself pleased with the transfer budget which has been handed to him by the club’s chairman Rod Petrie and said that it was too early to determine whether any of the 16 players who are out of contract next summer
were deserving of a new deal.
'Players' contracts will become shorter'
He said that: "It's pretty obvious that contracts will become shorter in football. That will be an ongoing thing with each transfer window. I have to establish what values the players have for us at the minute and we are nowhere near that yet.
"I fully intend to make sure anybody that joins the club adds to the quality we've got here and is an important and influential signing."
Calderwood failed to inspire his new charges to victory in his first match, having fallen 4-2 at Aberdeen to leave his side in ninth place, but he said that his players have reacted well to his appointment as manager. "They're very enthusiastic, very open to
what we're putting to them."
Meanwhile, he is preparing his players for a trip to face Dundee United on Saturday, 30 October.
He said that: "Sometimes we might have to scrap and take points that we don't deserve and that might be the foundation for us. We've got to improve results. If the foundation of that is points first and performance after, then we'll take it."
