  1. it is a water soluble glue made from boiling down animal products, it is used predominantly in wood working.

it is purchased in the form of pellets or granules and is heated until it is molten (approx 80 degrees celsius) before being applied.

it is renowned for being able to form incredibly strong rubbed glue joints, a joint made by applying glue to both surfaces and rubbing them together until they bond, with no clamping required.

it's most common use today, in a market flooded with newer and more readily available wood glues, is instrument making, specifically instruments in the violin and viol de gamba families. It is used by luthiers (the instrument makers) for many reasons such as tradition, and it's ability to be heated and the join broken for repair purposes.

  2. Hide glue is made from animals, typically horses that've been put down due to disease, injury or old age.

Hide glue is a woodworking glue, and is often used to apply veneers to surfaces as well as in the making of wooden musical instruments such as violins.
