Hidemasa Sano claims Men’s 200m butterfly title in Moscow: 2011 FINA World Cup
The seven stop FINA World Cup series saw a thrilling swim in Moscow, Russia, on Tuesday, October 18. The session of the meet conducted the Men’s 200m butterfly event.
Japanese swimmer, Hidemasa Sano, the bronze medallist in 200m butterfly at the 2011 Summer Universiade, was up against one of his strongest contestants, Commonwealth medallist, Chad Le Clos, and 14 time Olympic champion, Michael Phelps, in the final heat.
Sano got-off to flying start and ousted his rivals by powering the finishing wall with a mouth shattering time of 1 minute and 51.62 seconds to win the Men’s 200m butterfly title.
The silver title went to Chad Le Clos with a time of 1 minute and 51.95 seconds, while Phelps won bronze medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 53.24 seconds. Le Clos won two gold medals in 200m butterfly and 400m IM races at the 2010 Commonwealth Games,
in Delhi. Phelps, on the other hand, has won 14 Olympic Games titles in all his major meets of swimming during 2004-2008.
In the meantime, Pawel Korzeniowski earned fourth place honours by touching the finishing wall in a time of 1 minute and 54.15 seconds and Nikolay Skvortsov settled for fifth place in a time of 1 minute and 56.43 seconds. Additionally, Velimir Stjepanovic
got sixth position by posting a time of 1 minute and 57.06 seconds.
Diogo Carvalho of Portugal picked seventh spot by submitting a time of 1 minute and 59.10 seconds, while Sergey Strelnikov of Russia settled for eighth place in a time of 1 minute and 59.87 seconds. The matchless swimming effort of Hidemasa Sano captured
the attention of Moscow’s arena and the toppers were honoured with accolades and cash prizes after the session’s completion.
The 2011 FINA World Cup is a valuable series for both young and senior level swimmers to prepare themselves hard for their upcoming meets at the London Olympic Games, in 2012. Berlin, the metropolitan of Germany is scheduled to host the third round of the
seven stop World Series from October 22-23.
