I have to go to the dentist tomorrow and I am a high anxiety patient as they call us and I have to be put to sleep only thing is is that the dentist I have to go to doesnt do I.V. sedation but he gives the Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). I am terrified of dentist because the last one I went to when he put the novacain in it didn't work and I felt everything but he didn't beleive me so now I am terrified. Any ideas as to what I can do to keep calm? If I bring my mp3 player and like one of those eye mask for when you sleep so I can't hear or see anything will that work and will they let me?

I know its alot but I really need the help! Thanks!

  1. first off thats messed up that the first dentist didnt believe you.

second, ive had 7 teeth pulled at once, and i had the IV and slept through it and it hurt putting the IV in, i wanted the laughing gas instead. so in your case, dont worry too much, the laughing gas is better.

  2. keep reassuring yourself, boosting your own confidence, reminding you that there are hundreds of people going to the dentist for various procedures, many of them painful, but most of them are able to go through the experience well! you could very well be among them!

  3. If the anxiety is too much for you, you might want to consider getting a prescription for Xanax from your doctor.  I used to have a lot of anxiety when going to the dentist, because of prior bad experiences.  But now I have a Xanax prescription for my anxiety and take a very small dose (0.25 mg) about 10 minutes before the dentist.  It's just enough to keep you relaxed.

It has really helped me.  Going to the dentist is a breeze now.  Plus, I have found a new dentist who is the nicest guy.  He's always asking me if I'm ok and if I have any pain he makes sure to numb me up a little more.  Finding a caring and understanding dentist is also key.

  4. You can definally bring your MP3 player, your dentist shouldn't mind, especially if it helps you and him. And keep your eyes close so you don't see whats happening. But if at any moment after the novacain you feel pain, tell them that your in pain that instant. After I got novacain I felt the drill inside my tooth and it hurt like h**l, and ever since then I've been hesitant in the chair.
