Question:

High Calorie Meals for Toddlers?

My three year old's doctor says she needs to be on a high calorie diet. She gave me all the ideas on ways I can sneak extra calories in like tossing her veggies in olive oil and putting cream into her oatmeal and cereal. She still is a very picky eater and these ideas don't work when she refuses to eat. What are some good high calorie foods and snacks I can give her? She also loves fruit and would eat it all day if I let her. Only problem is fruit isn't usually high in calories, Anyone have a good recipe for smoothies with a lot of calories also?

  1. Babies can be picky and I made him yummy smoothies with whole milk and yogurt and tastes good.  Add fruit like bananas.   I would grind carrots in my son's pasta sauces and he loved it.  I made french toast with 2 eggs on a piece of bread.  I soaked the eggs in the bread for that protein babies need and it makes great finger foods.  I hope I helped

  2. Will she eat chocolate?  You could dip the fruit in chocolate for extra fat and sugar (and a few flavonoids, especially if you can convince her to eat darker chocolate.)

Will she eat cheese?  Grilled cheese is a favorite among many picky eaters, and it certainly can be made high-fat and high-calorie.

Pizza might also be a good bet.

If she'll eat peanut butter or doesn't mind the flavor of nuts, you could make ice cream sundaes with peanut butter or shakes with peanut butter mixed in or top/roll desserts in chopped nuts.

You can make trail-mix style cookies (oatmeal would be a good bet) with plenty of nuts, candy bits, chocolate chips, and dried fruit mixed in.

Will she eat any dips or sauces?  Salad dressings?  These can have healthy stuff mixed in them and might camoflauge foods she doesn't particularly like.

And give it some time--I used to be a pretty picky eater, but I grew out of it and she probably will, too.  Just be sure that any time she completely hates something that it doesn't make her sick.

Like, I'm allergic to raw tomatoes, and every time I'd get a little piece of them in my mouth, I would flip out and spit everything out of my mouth because it felt so weird.

Later on, when I tried tomatoes on purpose, I realized that they made my lips swell, my tongue go numb, and I also had a horrible skin reaction to them.

Sometimes "hatred" of a food is a child trying to avoid an allergen.  Ask her if the food makes her feel funny, like it makes her lips feel big or her throat feel weird or her stomach hurt or anything like that.

But if she just doesn't like it...give it some time.  I used to avoid fried foods, all sauces and gravies (!) and I hated onions and garlic.

Trust me, I got over it.

  7. Here is the smoothie breakfast I made for my kid:

1 banana +any other berry if you have them(Strarberry, blueberry,...)

    some cereal

    1 yo baby yogurt

    some whole milk

    Blend

  8. carnation instant breakfast in her milk. Whole milk. Peanut butter and nuts for snacks. How about dried fruits and nuts with a little bit of chocolate in it. Instead of making oatmeal with water, make it with a little water (just enough to wet it). When it comes out really thick you can cool it and thin it with enough whole milk to make it the right texture.

  9. I had a similar problem with my son when he was a toddler.  Was and still is a skinny kid...very active and burns off every ounce of calorie he intakes.  He is healthy though.

I used smoothies with ice cream; fruit in the cereal if she loves fruit; the carnation instant breakfasts are good ideas; buy some of the ensure shakes to gain weight.

  10. just use like whole milk and not the fat free yogurt and stuff... its kinda hard to find stuff because everything is coming out with less calories because america has to many obese people....
