  1. It depends on what kind of power source you may choose. To creat the same strength of magnetic field,for higher voltage supply,it needs more turns of coil and less current consumption. For much lower voltage supply,it needs less turns of coil with thicker wire to pass more current. The result is the same.

    Design a strong magnetic with less money,here is the plan......

    buy a full wave rectifier good at least 400 volts and 25 amperes rate. Using directly 115 volts AC power source from

    any power outlet. Convert the 115 volt AC into 115 volt DC with the rectifier. Now find a big piece of steel rod at least one inches dia. or bigger. 6 inches length. Buy a roll of insolated copper wire,choose wire size AWG 18 or bigger.

    You need at least 500 feet. Now roll all the wire to the steel rod. Hook the + 115v to one side of coil and the -115v to other end. For protection overload,insert a 10 ampere fuse between the power source.

    To test: if the fuse burns at once,you need more turns of wire.

  2. Magnetic field strength is proportional to current.  Aim for high current, with lots of turns of wire.  Keep in mind though, that for a given piece of wire, the current will be proportional to the voltage.  V /  I = R

  3. You do not have a choice. You must first determine how much current you need to achieve the desired magnetic strength of the electromagnet.  Then you must apply whatever value voltage that is required to force that amount of current through the resistance of the windings of the electromagnet. The value of the voltage can be determined by the following;

    Volts = current x resistance of the electromagnet windings
