My recent eye pressures were 27. I don't know what normal eye pressures are? Are mine high or dangerously high?

  1. Normal is 21 or so. Have you been using any topical steroids like cortaid for mosquito bites? They run up your eye pressures a lot. Yes 27 is very high. Get treatment right away before you lose your sight.

  2. Normal (as in average) eye pressures are around 16-18.

But it's quite possible to have normal eyes with low and high pressures.

Your pressures are definitely high.  To decide if they are dangerously high, th eother tests for glaucoma need to be carefully done: principally visual fields and examination of the optic nerve as it enters the eye (Optic disc, cupping...)

If those are fine, pressures of 27 alone will not be grounds to start treating you for glaucoma, though I'd expect a recommendation of re-checks at short intervals (perhaps 3/12 a couple of times, then  6/12 checks), to make sure it stays that way, before concluding that pressures of 27 are normal and healthy *for you.*

Pressures are far from the key guide they were though to be 10-15 years ago.  People can have glaucoma with low pressure, and have high pressures without glaucoma...

  3. Yes, 27 is high.  But if you know your eye pressure it means you went to have an eye exam and the optometrist checked your whole eye health.  Did he or she tell you anything else about this?  High pressure is a risk factor for glaucoma, but just having high pressures doesn't mean you have glaucoma.  Your doctor should have explained more about just how much at risk you are depending on your overall eye health.  He or she would have told you if you have glaucoma, so I'm pretty sure you don't have it yet.  Talk to your eye doctor more.

  4. The normal reading should be 10 to 20.

Yours reading is high. It is dangerous. I think you shall get yourself to an eye doctor for further management. May be you have glaucoma.
