any motor, that may be why the HDs last alot longer albeit alot slower than the japbikes. ask any engineer, high RPMs kill a motor, what kind of miles can you get on your crotchrockets????

  1. Heat (ergo friction) is your engines enemy... all things being equal, the bike with the more RPM's is the 'older' bike and closer to death. But all things are not equal... while HD's are a lower RPM bike they are air cooled... a Goldwing with it's radiator will out last the HD 2 to 1 despite higher revs AND weight.

  2. have read of a CBR900RR doing two laps around the world, along with at least one j*p goldwing that went around the world twice i think.

CBR had over 350,000 miles on it and was still strong as of printing of the article i was reading.

  3. Been saying that for years. 15K RPMs ain't gonna last as long as 5K RPMs.

  4. RPM is an engine killer this is one reason why diesel engines last longer then gas.

  5. High rmps do not kill a sportbikes motor.  As long as do basic maintenance to the bike it will easily last for 100,000 miles or more.  The only catch here is that a vavle adjustment is part of routine maintenance.  It's really not that hard to do but the shops will do it for around $400.  Most crotchrockets are totaled or have transmition problems before the motor dies.  I have had very good luck with Honda bikes over the years, although they need to make a better cam chain tensioner.  Most owners I know just replace the unit with a manual one or ignore the rattling sound since the tensioner functions perfectly.  I have only heard of a few bikes over the years that were retired because of a motor problem other than the motor became out dated due to the newer rockets being more powerful and lighter.  Resale values fall on older crotchrockets because of two reasons: the newer bikes are constantly getting better and may bikes are dumped and have fairing damage to prove it.  Harleys seem to hold there value better since the bikes have not really improved that much in order to maintain the same v-twin engine sound.  Just as all Ducatis have to be v-twin, all harleys have to be handcuffed to that same engine that it had 100 years ago.  Sure they have found ways to improve the v-twin but it's still the same engine afterall.  Since the resale value is up on Harleys many of them keep getting repaired and accumulate mileage while at some point the j*p bike will get replaced since it will make better sence to just replace the bike rather than maintain or repair it.  I have an 02 Honda CBR600f4i with over 35k on it will no problems other than replacing the cam chain tensioner and basic maintenance.  It was my first sportbike and therefor was not by any means babied, the bike has a rev limiter and I have bumped it a number of times over the years and the bike is as good as new.  No wierd noises, loss of fluids, leaks, it burns no oil, still on original everything unless the oem parts were replaced such as the ehaust.  I have no problems with the clutch or transmission.  No crotchrocket has a bulletproof transmission and if you pop the clutch too many times secound gear seems to be the weak spot and spliting the cases is costly.

  6. Interesting concept. I also believe the sport bikes are designed to twist out higher rpm than Harleys because of the engine design being a more balanced unit and MOST likely not a V design? Higher rpm doesn't kill an engine, it's the rider that don't know what a red line is that kills the engine.
