Question:

High School Cross Country Runners and Runners in general?

I'm joining the JV High School Cross Country team next year and I hear the season starts a week after the first day of school. I was just wondering how long the first race would be (would it be a 5K, 10K, what?)

And also, what are some training tips I could do to prepare for try outs to make the team?

I only have about 2 months to train, but I've been running for about 2 years (although I wasn't seriously training, I was just running for a good workout).

ONE MORE THING How do try outs work- at least for your high school- what do the coaches ask you to do and what do they usually look for?

Thank you.

  1. High school cross country usually run a 5K for races. When I tried out for cross country, we had a week of work outs. The coach placed us in different groups to see how we ran. At the end of the week we had a team 5-K race and he placed us in varsity/JV. Last year was my first year of running XC, before that I also just ran for the work out. Good luck!

  2. -most HS courses are a 5K, or about 3.1 miles.

-As for training tips, you should probably run (duh.)Since you are probably in decent cardio shape already from previous experience,  try to start out at like 3 miles a day and gradually increase to up to 12-15. Make sure that you have good upper body and core strength. Having strong glutes is very important, as it helps with your form. Lift light weights with lots of repetitions to avoid adding bulk but still increasing strength.

-At my school, we don't have try outs so anyone who wants to join is welcome. We do have a preseason though, with conditioning and if you don't go to that (it IS optional) you aren't allowed to run in the first two dual meets of the season.

  3. It is a 5K (3.1 Mi.), if I were you for training I'd run 5-6 days a week.  Do 2 or 3 hard workouts each week, with a easy day to follow.  You need to run a 5K which is time "at a current hard pace" to see where your at and to determine your training paces.  Easy runs will be done at 1:30 to 2 minutes slower than current race pace.  Then knowing that pace will also help with interval and tempo running paces as well.  Since training for a 5K, 6 miles at once is plenty enough for a long run.  Hope this helped, good luck!

  4. its usually a 5k. except at our school we have a 2mile time trial i think in the first or 2nd week to see where we are, we dont have to try out, pretty much anyone can run as long as their dedicated and listen to the coaches. but we do have a varsity and jv team and then a C team which is just everyone else.

start running maybe like 20 miles a week and then slowly build up.

    good luck!

  5. The races are usually 5K races

when i train i usually not only run, but i swim laps as well. I also do a lot of core excersizes to build my core strength.

as for the try outs my coach is really intense and we do a lot of swimming and hard running and we practice at 5:00 in the morning on some days. so our try out are pretty much if you can actually make it through the first five week of summer camp then you are on the team. But im sure that the coach will probably be looking to see if you push your self during a run and that you have good determination.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  6. In high school your first race will likely be a 5k (since you are JV, it could also possibly be a 4k). You won't see a 10k cross country race until you get on the top 7 of an NCAA D1 or D2 college team.. As far as training goes, you should try to build up to 6-8 miles for a long run and try to get in at least 3 miles of running in 6-7 days per week. You should also try doing 400 and 800 meter repetitions to develop long range speed, and do short hill sprints to develop short range speed, technique, and leg strength. My high school didn't have tryouts (I graduated 2 years ago), but if you show enough competitive drive, dedication, and running ability you might be able to move up to varsity later in the season.
