Question:

High School GPA for transfer students?

I plan on transferring to Brooklyn College for the Spring '09 semester. I graduated High School in 2004 but didn't start going to college until last year. Currently, I have a 3.8 GPA (the lowest college GPA acceptable for transfer students at B.C. is 2.0) and enough credits to transfer. My overall High School GPA was 2.2 I believe. Do you think I will be accepted? I know I had a low High School GPA, but that was 4 years ago, and, as evidenced by my high college GPA, I have turned my academic career around. Do regular (not elite) schools weigh that into consideration, or are they very stubborn on you having to have a certain GPA from high school? On their website, it doesn't list the actual required high school GPA for transfer students.

  1. I can't speak for BC, but as an admission director for over 15 years, I don't weigh a transfer candidate's high school GPA as heavily when there is clear evidence that their college level work is strong.  Most college admission offices parallel this.

That being said, if you have a 3.8 but only have completed one or two courses within the past year, I might recommend a restricted admission (often called provisional admission).  This limits a student to a maximum number of credits and requires the student maintain a "B" average in courses taken in their first semester at my school. This is a way to ensure the student continues on a successful path and the provisional admission is NOT recorded on your transcript.

Your GPA is far above the minimum requirement. You have demonstrated an ability to successfully complete college level course work.  I suspect they will love to have you join their school (I would) and will offer you full and unqualified admission! Congratulations on your accomplishments, keep up the great work and best of luck in your future

  2. There is no reason to worry about your high school GPA. Your college grade point average is good enough apply to other colleges.
