Question:

High School Math Classes?

Is it possible to take both Algebra II and Pre-Cal at the same time.. like during the same school year?

[I have already taken algebra I and geometry, but I'd like to double up on math this year to get ahead.. I know if I do decide to do so it'll take a lot of work but as a straight A student who would like to attend the Governor's School for Math and Sciences for my junior and senior years, I'm definately up for the challenge.]

So do you need to know concepts from Algebra II to understand Pre-Cal? Or is it do-able with some help outside the classroom perhaps? My dad was a college math teacher so he could definately help me if I needed him to..

Thanks so much for your help =]

  1. At my high school, you could take Alg. 2 first semester, and pre-cal the nest. Careful though, most colleges want you to have a math your senior year, so be sure not to use them all up before you get there.

  2. only about half of what i learned in alg 2 was used in precal, but you do need alg 2. what a lot of my friends did was take precal in summer school to get ahead. if you're really really motivated (you seem like you are) then you could get started on alg 2 right now.

  3. I don't recommend those classes simultaneously. My Pre-Calc class heavily relied on the knowledge learned in Alg 2.

My Precalc had trig too. Some of those problems required Alg knowledge and word problem analysis.

  4. At my school it was also possible to take Algebra II first semester and Pre-Cal the next. You do need the concepts from Alg. 2 for Pre-Cal. Then after you have taken those you can take AP Statistics or AP Calculus. The more AP's the better, thats the less math you have to take in college. It is definitely a smart thing to do get as ahead in math as you can!

  5. Well, if you have knowledge for algebra II, I'd say go for it! But keep an algebra II textbook with you as pre-calc deepens so if you get caught up with something, you won't be confused. =) And make sure both math teachers know your situation so that they can pay special attention to you.
