Question:

High School Swimming?

I have been swimming since I was nine and just swam a season on our girls high school swim team as a freshman. It's kind of expected that you'll have some sort of time drop after your first season on the high school team. I was working my butt of and practicing constantly and for some reason I stayed the same, as far as my times go. When the season was over I took two weeks off before I went back to my winter club team. When I went back I couldn't believe how slow and out of shape I had gotten. (I had taken way longer breaks than this before and this never happend) At the first meet I was five seconds or more slower in everything that I swam. I worked out 3 usually 4 days a week during the winter season. By the end of the winter season I was 10 to 16 seconds slower. I know I was working out less, but should this big of a plateau have occurred? Has anyone had anything like this happen to them? How did you get over the frustration of it?

  1. Try different types of workouts.  For example, if you do a lot of distance right now, try focusing on sprints.  It is important to be in both good aerobic condition and have the ability to swim fast for short periods of time.

  2. i have the exact same thing happening to me! im a freshman too and i feel so slow! it is really frustrating, but im just pushing through the practices and i talked to my coaches, i might do practices on my own every once in a while, just to get back in shape at my own pace.

  3. I think u should be on a diet and lose weight. U may have eaten a lot of junk food.

  4. You may need to alternate your workout a little bit or even try swimming not as often because its sounds like your body is pretty tired after the high school season (I know they worked us much harder in HS practice, and we also swam more often) so it took a little bit more rest to start to get back into things. A lot of swimmers hit a sudden slowing and even a stop in improvement with their swimming. I recently just took 8 weeks off due to a 12 day hospital stay, and being sick for several weeks, and coming back has been hard. My coach has told me that even if you take a week or two off that it may take double the time (or even more) to get back to where you were, and to start improving again. As far as the frustration of getting over things I've just had to tell myself that I am doing better everyday and I've been through a lot so I don't have to swim where I was before. I would also suggest talking to your coach to see if there is any tips they have for you. Good luck!
