Question:

High School Volleyball Tryouts!!!?

Hey!

I'm a Senior this year and was thinking about trying out for my High School VB team. Do you think I have a chance of making the team? I consider myself as an advanced beginner...I can pass, set, hit, and serve okay.

1. What will they be asking us to do? What should I do to show the coach that I am comitted and dedicated to learning and getting better? That I'm what they need?

2. I'm 5'7". What position do you think I would be good at?

3. JV or Varsity? Do I have to choose, or do they hold tryouts for both at the same time and decide which one I would be better in?

Thanks in advance!!!

  1. <Chance of making the team> It really depends on the level of competition at your school. Each team would need 10-15 players, and if you only have 6-9 players showing up at the try out, you would be all on the team. As you mentioned you think yourself an advanced beginner and you know those fundamentals, it will be the coach's call whether you are top 10 or whether there could be 20 more players better than you. Again, the level of other players are at would affect your standing.

<1> you are pretty much there. Those are key elements coaches want from their players. You will be asked to do some stretch and warm-up, mainly to protect you from being injured. Then some peppering, passing from several positions to your setter; Serving; hitting with 3-step approach. If you know more than that, find a chance to tell the coach, or ask a question that shows your knowledge. When it is time for some scrimmage, call the ball loudly when needed (such as "I go", "Free", "Out"...).

2> 5'7" in high school girl's team is good enough to play any position, but you might want to focus on DS/Libero if your passing is great.

3> It sounds to me that you have never been on a volleyball team, so JV would be a realistic shot unless your school doesn't have enough players to play on varsity. Most high school coaches go to their local middle school and find tall players so that most players start playing in MS or as freshman. Starting at Senior is a little too late, to be honest, but you should be fine if you believe in yourself.

Good luck, and have fun. Don't forget to bring your kneepads.

  2. if you practice you have a chance

they will ask you to serve and pass to certain spots

you should pay attention to show the coach you are commited and you should not talk and give her/him eye contact and your full attention

You could be a spiker or play back row.  Depends on what you are better at.

I have no idea what your school does but its your choice if you think you are ready and confident in your self for varsity

  3. not to be mean but no you probably wont stand a chance because the peope who gone be on varsity is the people who played all three years because when you on varsity you play for championship and they wont put beginers on the team

so sorry you never should wait until you senior year because the coach gone put there same players on there the ones they kbnow can get them somewhere

    so sorry good luck though
