  1. I've coached high school swimming for almost 30 years.  Freshman need to have basic skills as my coaches and I teach stroke.  Once basic strokes are mastered, we don't, unless they have experience and are at a high competitive level already,  push the freshman for about a month.  If you show potential, no coach will cut you as a freshman.

Just make sure you pay close attention when the coach is talking.

Note to Jessie K ... I couldn't disagree with you more.  High school is incredibly competitive and it is the thrill of doing the right thing and winning that is stressed.  My swimmers, during the regular season, swim 9-10,000 yds per day.  On Saturdays, they swim one work out going about 8,000.  Over spring break they swim about 11-12,000 per day.  My teams are VERY competitive.  Last year, the fastest swimmer in the 50 free went 20.1.  I had girls that went 1:06 in the 100 breast, 2:09 in the IM and several girls that went 54 in the 100 free.  One girl at 5:06 in the 500, but two girls in our league went 4:42 and 4:45.  Boys at 1:43 and 1:44 in the 200.  Those are almost all Jr. and Sr. National times.  A high number of kids from local high school teams went to the Olympic trials (none made the team).

  2. You mainly have to know free- the rest are easy to learn just by watching when you're in the water. Remember, the points of high school sports are to have fun, learn how to work on a team, and physical fitness! Not competition.

  3. just try, if you dont make the team, practice for the next tryouts. yeah you do need to learn the 4 strokes.

  4. They will train you to make you better. Not everyone is great at all 4 strokes. They will only have you swim what you are best at during competition. You should definitely try out.

  5. The main thing is to at least know how to swim freestyle properly. If you know all four strokes, of course, it is to your advantage but it isn't necessary. I would say that even if you're unsure, you might as well go out for the team. The worst thing that could happen is that you don't make it and you could always swim on your own if you really enjoy it. There are also swim clubs/schools in each state that offer training opportunities for people of all abilities. Check out www.usaswimming.org if you are interested in more information!
