Question:

High Temperature in a toddler?

My 20 month old son had a high temperature last night. He was off his food all day and fell asleep on his dad's shoulder at 6.30pm (very early for him, he rarely goes to bed before 9pm usually, and not without a fight, lol!)

When I went up to bed and checked on him, he was really, really hot. I undressed him down to his vest and opened a window, but he didn't seem to cool down. He woke up shortly afterwards and couldn't seem to get back to sleep. I put him in our bed and he just kicked and thrashed and rolled around for ages and was burning up. He finally went to sleep after a dose of Calpol.

He seems absolutely fine this morning however!

Is it normal for toddlers to have a high temp like this for no reason and be just fine the next day - I'm a bit worried . . .

  1. he must have had a temperatuve for a reason

take him to a doctor as soon as you can - if nothing else, this will give you peace of mind - there is no point taking chances with your child

its often the case that virusses or infections give us temperatures at night but not during the day, so you should get him checked out as soon as you can (but no panic, as he seems relatively fine now)

  2. Well, a fever is a sign that your body is trying to fight off infection. Although fevers that last too long and are very high can be a bad sign. But a little fever tells you that their body is fighting off infection. So the fact that he woke up fine tells you that his body was able to fight off whatever it was trying to get. So it is actually a good thing that he is fine today, but do not be surprised if other symptoms show up later in the day. Good Luck!

  3. Keep an eye on him, if his temp goes up again sponge him down with a TEPID not cold flannel, all over. Cold will make his blood vessels constrict and his temp will go up further and he could fit. Check for any rashes (pin prick that blanches is usually a virus). If it continues take him to your GP. Calpol is probably the best way to go. If you can't lower his temp, he is listless or showing any other symptoms that concern you take him to A&E. It wil probably pass in a day or too, but keep a close eye on him to be sure. Good Luck

  4. you should wash him with cool water if he appears feverish.  High temps are serious.  Make every attempt to cool him down as soon as possible.  Speak with your doctor about it immediately.

  5. He could be teething. Many kids have a fever when they are cutting new teeth. Just keep an eye on him and make sure he is drinking plenty of fluids. Sometimes kids just have an off day. He could also be fighting an infection and this would cause a fever, less likely though since he sounds fine today.

  6. my little boy 2yrs had this a couple of wks ago he went to bed fine then woke with a temperature of 39c i stripped him down and gave him nurofen for children i think this takes the temperature down much faster than calpol.but he was fine day after too.just keep him monitored and give him plenty to drink if his temp rises again i'd probably taske him to a&e just to be safe.x

  7. That's kids for you!

Have you up all night worried sick, they get up in the morning absolutely fine.

You did the right thing stripping him and giving Calpol, keep an eye on him for the next few days, he may have a bug lurking.

  8. He could of had a 24 hr virus and disappeared, but i will keep a eye on it as it might be still a little in his system and flair up again and turn into infection and that will cause high temp.

If  a child or an adult gets high temp its cause thats the way the body way to fight infections, or virus that enter the body. Try to kill them by heat..........
