Question:

High Way Code?

I had to learn it for my orginal test and also refress for an advance driving course in 2002. Why should we not all have to remember it, as it only helps to save lives.

I'm not talking about stopping distances as these have changed with the upgrading of brakes and we all know thw code has not been updated to match, but I have always said that we should know the code in order to be safe on the roads.

Random testing is required.

  1. Did you know that you can pass your test without reading the HW Code? It can be done.

I have 4 different issues on my shelf, including the latest.

I agree about stopping distances, I argued against them when I was 1st learning-1963!

  2. I agree, the amount of people that don't use correct lane discipline, don't know how to use junction boxes and even more scary, don't seem to know what a red traffic light means!

I think the practical test should be made to be re-sit every 5 years. People are driving around in extremely fast weapons and a lot of them can't use them correctly.

Your not allowed to use a bench grinder without a certificate, which expires after a period of time, yet, you can take a 45 minute test to say your able to drive a 1.5 ton  machine capable of over 150MPH for most of your life without re-training!

  3. I agree as well. There are far too many idiots who don't seem to have a clue (or give a d**n) on the roads these days.

If nothing else, all those numpties failing their retests would make the roads quiter for the rest of us.

  4. I agree with you 100 percent....................................

  5. I would say, from experience from my Theory Test last year, that the Highway Code is more or less mostly common sense. Some schools do incorporate the code into curriculum, I know mine does, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to make sure everyone learnt it, and I know that not everyone abides by it.

  6. I agree, things change considerably over the years and most drivers only brush up on the Code for test purposes - as you did.

Perhaps we should have to undertake a Theory Test every 5/10 years - that'd make sure everyone revised the latest edition.

  7. The trouble is that with each new edition we would all have to learn a different code. For instance, when I took my test in 1970,

many things that are in the code these days, didn't exist. Drugs weren't known and weren't a problem, likewise motorways, there was only one in those days, aptly named the M1. Seat belts are another modern introduction, back then in 1970, they weren't needed, even if you had a new car that had them fitted.

I was taught how to indicate to other drivers, with hand and arm signals, that I was slowing down or about to turn left. Would you know how?
