Question:

High chair tray does not fit toddler with very big belly?

My friends toddler (22 months) is very overweight ...36 1/2 lbs. Before you criticize, there is an underlying undiagnosed medical condition for which they are going through testing. Nutritionist says that according to what the toddler is eating and drinking on a daily basis, they are underfeeding so weight gian is unexplained.

Child does not walk yet (going to therapy 3 times a week) and does not self feed so really needs to still be in a high chair. The problem is that the tray from the high chair will not fit because of the childs big belly. Has anyone ever had this problem or can suggest a high chair with a tray for a bigger than normal sized baby? The mother could always just pull the high chair up to the table and leave off the tray but it is just so much easier to have a tray because it has the lip so that food does not get pushed off the tray.

  1. Maybe someone can call the manufacture  of the high chair and ask them if they have any thing that would accommodate the 22 month old baby.

  2. Let him eat on the floor with a table mat. And he might even be able to crawl around like that if he doesn't crawl yet. The weight isn't anything don't worry about it i used to be a fatty when i was young, didn't even go to a nutritionist thing and I'm really skinny now and trying to gain weight ( i weigh 32 kgs and am only 14 ) . My aunt said she couldn't even lift lol !

But if you think there is something really wrong then keep on with the nutritionist!

  3. just buy a booster seat for the regular table and let the child eat from a regular table

  4. Maybe she could get a wooden high chair with wooden tray, and then have a local carpenter take an extra curve out of the tray to suit and smooth it off nicely / put a new lip on it?

Alternatively, maybe go ask some questions on forums for parents of disabled kids - those with conditions that lead to very slow development could well need highchairs when they're physically larger than normal. Or maybe they do something else? I don't know but I'm sure they will.

Hope they can figure out what's wrong and get kiddy some help :(

  5. Most high chairs have different setting for the tray. If hers do not then she will have to go invest in another one. My 23 month old had a Graco and it worked great while she was in it. The tray had 3 levels to adjust to. Tell your friend Good Luck
