High input farming or low input?

Cuba adopted low input organic agriculture out of necessity. If the country were to become economically prosperous once more, do you think Cubans would maintain this form of agriculture, or do you think they would turn to intensive, high-input farming instead? What path do you think they should pursue, and why?

  1. High input is necessary if you want to increase yield per uint of land particularly true for areas where agricultural land is a limitation. If you have sufficient land and the country's is not fully dependent on agriculture low input agriculture will be ok.

  2. They should use Fidel's rotten carcase to fertilize their ugly looking crops...

  3. High input farming means high production, low input, low output.  When Cuba gets prosperous they will go to high input more profitable farming.  The path that I think they should take is the one that is best for themselves and Cuba.  Organic farming by force will not work out as well organic farming by choice. People that choose to farm organically are willing to accept the lower yields and lower income to grow the kind of food they want.  Poor people will opt for increased income.

  4. Farmers are some of the most efficient producers we have.  They have tremendous yeilds of high quality products.  100 years ago half of us lived on farms.  Now less than 2% raise all the food for our nation and export food to the rest of the world.

Cuba cannot sustain themselves with their methods of farming.  They have to have outside sources
